Information about Counselors:
Becoming a Vivace String Camp counselor is a rare opportunity for college students who are majoring in music education. Counselors model professional behavior as musicians and teachers for the students they are responsible for during the camp week, as well as the campers they interact with in classes and at camp performances.
- Counselor's duties begin on Sunday, July 29, 2012 and end on Sunday August 5.
- Counselors are expected to arrive mid day at Houghton College's Greatbatch School of the Arts to register, unpack and assist the directors and registrar with final camp preparations.
- On Saturday, July 30, counselors will assist with camp registration in the Campus Center.
- Following registration, counselors assume responsibility for their 6-10 campers. They must know where their campers are at anytime of the day, including their classes and recreation locations. Counselors walk their kids between buildings with their campers, sleep in the dorm near their campers (in their own room), enforce sleep and wake-up times, and monitor camper behavior.
- Two counselors will be assigned as Conductor Assistants. Other counselors will be assigned to play in the two large ensembles and to help campers as needed.
- Counselors attend a daily meeting in the mornings, held by the Head Counselor.
They are accountable to the Head Counselor and the Camp Director.
- Counselors are encouraged to observe camp classes and rehearsals, and may be called upon to assist with chamber music rehearsals and orchestra sectionals by the faculty.
- Counselor duties end on Sunday August 8. They supervise their campers cleaning up their rooms, packing and loading out. They also collect camper's room keys to return to the camp office. Their honorium is then available for pickup at the camp office.
